In the search of ever faster graphics, Samsung have revealed their new incarnation of DDR memory. GDDR5 has been built specifically with graphics technology in mind. GDDR5 neary doubles the speed data can be pushed to the graphics chipset by GDDR3 (from 3.2 gb to 6gb per sec).
Impressively, on a typical 512 mega-bit design with 32 stacked chips, this amounts to 24 gigabytes of bandwidth that Samsung claims is enough to play 16 DVD videos at once.
Maybe more pertinent for the laptop market is that the memory is also 20 percent more power-efficient than the earlier graphics technology.
